A good 19th Century ‘Chine Trade’ cotton canvas by Lai Fong, depicting the three masted sailing ship the ‘SS Bann’, sailing on Port tack, with a steamship on the horizon. Lai Fong, despite being of Chinese origin, was the leading pier head artist in Calcutta, producing a remarkable number of large oil painting portraits of sailing vessels from all over the world for the captain or owner of the ship. The ships are always accurately depicted and the sea realistic, something not often found with Chinese artists. His work was painted on light cotton canvas, which often causes crazing in the oil, which collectors and curators prefer untouched feeling it adds to the charm of his work. The SS Bann was an iron three masted sailing ship trading between Liverpool and the Far East and Australia. She was built in 1875 by TR Oswald & Sunderland for J.Nourse, with a gross tonnage of 1736T and a length of 250 feet and was captained by Capt J.T. Cutting.
