A superb Japanese lacquer box
Meiji period H: 5 in / 12½ cm W: 9½ in / 24 cm D: 8¼ in / 21 cm Stock Number: 83089a/sp10 £16,500
A superb Japanese lacquer box for writing paper and gold lacquered to all surfaces, except the underside, with brilliantly executed gold Makie designs. The top of the box decorated with a scene of a bridge over a river with a sampan just going underneath it and with Mount Fuji in the background, the sides have a continuous decoration of hills and trees by the sea, whilst removing the top of the box reveals a removable tray decorated with plants shielded by bamboo shades on a hillside with trees in the distance. A beautiful and rare object.
