Amberley Castle, Amberley Near Arundel, West Sussex BN18 9ND  Since the 12th century, Amberley Castle has nestled in the lee of the lovely South Downs, few have had the good fortune to discover what lies within its walls - until now! The oak portcullis is still lowered each night giving total security and peace of mind. The Lands of Amberley were given by the Saxon King Caedwalla to St. Wilfred 1st Bishop of Selsey in 682 AD, it was Wilfred who bought Christianity to the area and converted the King.  The original manor house and the village church were built around 1100 by Bishop Luffa of Chichester.Around the mid 14th century Bishop Reede was granted the 'Licence to Crenellate' by King Richard II - this allowed the great curtain wall and massive gatehouse to be constructed, which has since dominated the landscape and provides the dramatic south facing elevation. A unique Norman castle with AA red star status and wonderful food in the charming Sussex countryside close to Arundel.  Many of Amberley Castle's 19 luxurious, individually-designed bedrooms and suites boast four poster beds.The five suites, known collectively as The Bishopric, have been created from two 17th century stone buildings situated within the dry moat. All bedrooms and suites have an en-suite Jacuzzi bathroom, remote control colour television, tea & coffee making facilities, video player, direct dial telephone, radio, trouser press, hair dryer, toiletries and home made biscuits.
