CHEST ON CHEST or TALLBOYS Circa 1700 –1820
One step on from the chest on chest, used mainly for storing clothes in the bedroom. Built as two chests of drawers the upper chest slightly narrower than the lower, mostly straight fronted on bracket (often ogee) feet. Upper part has two or three short drawers over three long graduated drawers, a projecting moulded cornice, with occasionally a broken pediment, some have a frieze and earlier ones may also have a concealed cushion drawer. Lower part has three long drawers with a moulding around top into which the upper chest fits, this also may have a brushing slide and some have a secretaire drawer. Made from walnut veneer, mahogany (solid or veneer) occasionally rosewood and other fancy timbers during the
Regency period. Also country versions in oak.
