An early 20th century wooden championship size chess board from the Aintree Institute Chess Club, presented to them by Mr John O Baxter in 1928, the board has fiddle sycamore and rosewood squares with a mahogany banding enclosed within a Bakelite style frame painted to simulate tortoiseshell, with silver plaques giving the club name and the benefactors name, together with three other plaques giving the winners names, D. Pritchard 1928-9, H. Durrant 1929-30 & D. Pritchard 1930-1. The squares measure 2¼ x 2¼ inches (5.7 x 5.7 cm).

As an aside, the Beatles played at the Aintree Institute in the 1960’s.
