A delightful sketch of a child’s favourite pony.
Arthur John Elsley was a celebrated painter of portraits, genre and animals. Often compared with John Morgan, with whom he shared a studio until the turn of the century, he painted sentimental scenes of children and animals. Some of these works today sell at leading auction rooms for six figure sums. In 1894 when Charles burton Barber died, he became the foremost exponent of paintings depicting children and pets. He exhibited 52 works at the Royal Academy and many others at exhibition venues throughout the British Isles. He is represented in numerous Art Galleries/Museums.
