A superb quality 19th century continental silver plated jewellery casket decorated to the sides and top with exceptional scenes of different aspects of life which seem to be centred on a village inn. The top panel with two men and two women dancing in the garden of the inn with a musician playing some form of bagpipes whilst standing on a barrel. The front panel is of four soldiers in the inn, three playing cards at a table, whilst the fourth is asleep by the fireplace, the first side panel shows a mother and daughter outside the property filling a bowl with water for the duck which is inside a pen, the back panel shows two men sitting on stools by an oven whilst a third man stands at the back marking of the days of the week on a wooden post, lastly the second side panel shows a mounted man outside the door to the inn with the innkeeper filling the riders cup with a drink from his jug.
The casket is decorated throughout with trailing vines and flowers, with a corinthian column in each corner with female mythical beasts at the base and the whole casket is supported on lion paw feet.
The lid opens to reveal an original mid blue silk interior and it also comes with a working lock and key.
At the moment I am not sure which country to attribute this to and would welcome suggestions. Possibly the unusual shaped duck pen will help someone to come up with an idea.
