A fine 19th Century coromandel games box by Fisher, the lid opens to reveal a blue silk lined interior with a brass plaque engraved ‘Fisher, 188 Strand’, the removable top tray contains a Staunton pattern carved bone chess set, two fine brass engraved cribbage and belique boards with their brass peg markers, two fine ivory whilst swivelling finger pointers, playing counters and dice, under this tray is a folding leather chess and backgammon board, the base has various sized compartments with a fine set of double six bone dominoes, dice shaker, packs of cards, fine turned boxwood and ebony counters and further coloured bone and wood playing counters.

Samuel Fisher at 188 Strand first shows up in the London directories in 1839 (as a dressing case maker), and continued through at least 1899. In 1882 the listings changed to Fisher & Son. Although it is generally assumed that Fisher was solely a retailer, he is also listed as an ivory Turner in the 1865 and 1869 trade directories.
