A very unusual 19th century specimen and parquetry inlaid writing slope with a chess and cribbage board interior, the top, front and slope decorated with a selection of specimen woods in a geometric design with a large ornate starburst design to the fall, there are two drwaers to either side of the slopeat the rear and a long single drawer to the front, on opening the slope reveals a fitted chess board with a cribbage board to either side, this is all surrounded by a specimen wood border, complete with working lock and key. There is a slight split to the timber of the fall as can be seen in the photographs.
In over 30 years of collecting and dealing I have never seen anything like this before and can only conclude that the person commissioned this piece to be be made for themselves so they could play chess and cribbage whilst travelling and is a very clever way to incorporate both functions in one box.
