This smart brass-bound ebony dressing case is inlaid with a coronet above an intricate monogram and flush handles. It opens to reveal a green velvet interior with twelve cut glass vessels all with incised and chased silver gilt lids. The removable tray has a selection of ten various tools and the recess below is fitted with ivory brushes and a leather compartment containing a scent bottle, a horn-shaped posy holder, a key and a seal incised ‘MAK’. The unusual element in this box is the secure jewellery drawer, which can only be accessed by using a special tool through the left hand lock plate to release the spring. The inside of the lid is fitted with an easel mirror behind a leather document wallet enscribed VR F.West Manufacturer to the Royal Family, 1 St James’s Street. The entire ensemble is incised with birds and foxes against C-scrolls and foliage centred on the original crowned monogram surrounded by a ring of turquoises. Bearing a maker’s plate F West, Manufacturer to Her Majesty, Prince Albert & The Royal Family. The assay stamps are London, 1850 with the maker’s mark for Thomas Diller. The original locks stamped Bramah, Piccadilly below a crown.
