A superb late 19th century ebony ladies dressing/vanity case by F. West, London, with brass edges and line inlay decoration, large flush fitting brass side carrying handles, opening the top reveals a blue velvet lined
interior with thirteen engraved silver gilt cut glass bottles and containers, all with the owners initials which are surrounded by a circle of turquoise, the front drops down to reveal a glass covered tray with a selection of
twenty three various tools and implements, many also with the turquoise decoration, amongst these is a small compass which is a very rare item to find in one of these cases, dropping the front allows two cantilever
trays to open revealing two silver gilt and glass scent bottle holders, below these trays is a compartment contains five ivory backed brushes, again decorated with turquoise, and a comb, below this is a further drawer
containing a small notebook which the owner commenced writing in on Christmas Day 1889, removing the drawer allows access to a secret well in the base of the case, the interior of the lid is fitted with two doors which
open to reveal a fitted clock to one side and a barometer to the other, with a removable easel mirror behind, by pressing a small screw at the rear of the case a small side drawer is opened and this contains a small tool which fits into four holes in the sides of the opening doors and this then releases four more secret drawers, a back plate at the rear of the case is inscribed F. West, Manufacturer to Her Majesty and the Royal Family, 1, St. James’s St.

The silver gilt tops have two dates on them, 1875 and 1924, which would suggest the case underwent some changes at the later date.

Fritzmaurice West, cutlery and dressing case manufacturers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and other members of the Royal Family, succeeded G. Palmer at 1, St James’s Street in 1844. They moved to 2 St James’s Street in 1877, then to 9 King Street in 1883.
