A luxury American vintage leather bound games compendium dating from the late 1950’s. The large leather bound box is decorated with gold tooling lines and with brass carrying handles to the sides. Opening the lid reveals a great selection of games, starting in the top section with a roulette wheel and cloth, a set of dominoes, a folding wooden cribbage board with its scoring pegs in a compartment underneath, six packs of playing cards (five of them are still sealed) and a Sillete chess set made by Grays of Cambridge.Â
The drop down front reveals two drawers, with the left one containing a large number of circular gaming chips in blue, red, yellow and white. The right hand drawer has two levels with the top removable tray with backgammon pieces, a selection of dice and letter tiles for Scrabble. Underneath this are four red plastic Scrabble tile holders and scorers together with the scoring pegs.
In a separate compartment below are the three removable folding boards for the games, with one for chess and checkers, one for Scrabble and the other for backgammon.
Inside the lid are the four scoring pencils for bridge, together with the scoring pads.
Also included in the box are three instruction booklets. One for Scrabble, one for the Instructions and Rules for Dice Games and the other by the Popper Games Co, New York City with the Instructions and Rules for, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Acey-ducey, Gin Rummy, Cribbage, Dominoes, Roulette, Chuck-a-luck, Craps, Horse Race, Put and Take, Poker Dice and lastly Bowling (although this last game isn’t included in the compendium).Â
I have not been able to find a manufacturers or retailers name on this set, which is quite surprising giving the quality of the compendium.
I also think this is one of the first compendiums made which included the game of Scrabble.
