A beautifully painted large Spa tea caddy from Belgium. The exterior painted lid sets this caddy apart depicting formal buildings of the time with a air of sophistication. The sides & reverse panels give views of surrounding countryside and are titled, but have become worn over the years. The beautiful interior individual compartments lids still retain there vivid painting colour freshness & shows the caddy was hardly used. These are also titled and can still be read. The interior still has its remnants of a leaded lining. There is also a heraldic coat of arms which I assume would have belonged to the original owners. at the moment I don’t know who the family are, but I am doing some research to see if I can find out this information. This is a rare caddy and would grace any collection of the finest examples.
The building on the top of the caddy is titled A LA MEMOIRE DE PIERRE LE GRAND, and a picture of the same building in Spa, Belgium can be found in the Tate museum by Joseph Mallord William Turner, entitled The ‘Pouhon Pierre Le Grand’ at Spa, c.1839.
