ANTIQUE IVORY GREEN & WHITE CHESS SET BY WILLIAM LUND
King height: 4½ inches / 11.5 cm
Stock number: 742901/0119
A mid 19th century ivory chess setby William Lund, one side stained green, the other natural ivory, the royal pieces with openwork crowns on concentrically turned stems, the white king marked with the rare stamp ‘WILLM LUND Maker 24 FLEET STREET’.
William Lund’s shop at 24, Fleet Street is first noted in the London Directories in 1835 and was diagonally opposite 189, Fleet Street, which housed the Calvert workshop, another famous chess set maker. John Calvert’s wife sold off much of her stock in 1835 and it is clear that Calvert had a direct and significant influence on Lund’s chess making.
