ANTIQUE RARE JAQUES ‘CALVERT’ IVORY CHESS SET
Circa 1850 – 1865
Height of king: 3½ inches / 8.8 cm
Stock number: RW4201/0119
A rare Jaques ‘Calvert’ chess set, with mahogany slide top box, which is a little different in that whilst the likeness to the pattern book images is uncanny, there is no Jaques stamp. However, speculatively the knights are uniquely (from current research) Elgin marble horse heads most similar to the early Jaques Staunton knight heads and without doubt by similar hand.
Checked with an exhaustive database of sale records, there is no other similar hand in 53 other examples of Calvert sets coming to the market whereas the Elgin marble style knight head is much the same (save the direction of the ears) as all the Jaques Staunton sets of the time.
The informed speculation is that this is also a set from the Jaques catalogue and sold by Jaques between perhaps 1850 and 1865. We believe the slide top box is original.
