Please note that the decanter on the right hand side, when fired, went slightly skew-whiff, (please see the second photograph on the site). I am surprised that it was sold with the other one, which is fine. But these appeal to my sense of humour. I would put the first one out at dinner and then swap them a bit later and watch to see if anyone notices and thinks they have had to much to drink.

A late 19th century pair of decanters. This shape is commonly called a Newcastle decanter, and although there was a glass making center in this region there does not appear to be conclusive evidence to link the design with the area. The decanter body is a bell shape and moulded with heavy pillars, the style being reflected in the stopper.  The pontil is ground and polished out to the base, and the stopper has the same treatment (to the top), this is unusual for decanters and a quirk of these ‘Newcastle’ designs.  It is made in lead glass and is quite heavy. It holds a standard bottle of wine, and probably would have held wines rather than spirits in it’s time.
