An antique European (possibly Dieppe) finely carved ivory Corpus Christi with head turned to the right and eyes open, wearing a crown of thorns, attached to an tortoiseshell and ivory cross beneath an inscribed INRI panel, standing on an ebonised stepped wooden base which is decorated with ivory and tortoiseshell panels to the front and sides. This carvings detail is of very good quality, the way the ribs are showing and the expression on Jesus’ face are both deft and highly skilled.

Cross symbols predate Christianity, and ancient objects bearing crosses have been found in most parts of the world and the cross is the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith. It represents the death and resurrection of Jesus and serves as a reminder of our own sins and our need for redemption. The acronym INRI (I?sus Nazar?nus, R?x I?dae?rum) that we see above the figure represents the Latin inscription which in English reads as “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews”.
