An remarkable antique Indian ivory, ebony and sandalwood compendium from the first half of the the 19th Century of the highest quality, this Vizagapatham compendium is remarkable not only for the quality of the workmanship but also the fact that it has its original chess set and backgammon pieces in sandal wood and ivory to match the box and board, all contained in their original removable sandalwood boxes.
This is the second stunning and original Vizagatham compendium we have acquired recently. With the ivory ban upon us this is a great and perhaps last opportunity to add one of these stunning works of art to one’s collection. These compendiums are so evocative of Indian master craftsmanship and are typically displayed proudly in client’s homes as works of art. This is a complete set with chess, backgammon and shakers in its near original condition. The kings are an impressive 4.5 inches and the quality of the carving is fine. The thick ivory veneer is laid on top quality sandalwood and this compendium is complete with the three original fitted sandalwood boxes. The size of the board is excellent with near 2” squares which give a wonderful feel of space when the chess pieces are set up to play.
These fine sets have always been the domain of more wealthy families since they were carved 200 years ago and to find one in this condition is a pleasure.
