A 19th century Japanese 3 case inro decorated with two large, impressively golden hagoita against a shiny black roironuri background. Both “bats” feature intricate decoration, in part figural. The Japanese word hagoita is composed of two parts: hago, the shuttlecock, and ita, the bat. These bats were used in the game hanetsuki at new year’s and were sometimes very elaborately decorated. The inside of the inro is covered in red lacquer, with the artist’s signature Nobu-Aka (which can also be read as Enseki) on the bottom of the futa as well as the bottom of the uppermost story. Together with ojime bead and carved wooden netsuke.

Some signs of aging, but in good condition on the whole.
