Charles William Wyllie was the younger brother of William L. Wyllie. He painted coastal and inshore scenes, and some landscapes. Today he is as celebrated as William, his paintings often selling for very large sums at auction. He exhibited 55 paintings at the RA, the RBA 34, the ROI 50, the New Gallery 26, the Manchester and Liverpool Art Galleries 34, and elsewhere in London and Birmingham. ‘Digging for Bait’ was purchased by the Chantrey Bequest in 1877, and he is also represented at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, the Tate Museum and many other museum/galleries throughout England.
