A lovely watercolour by Eric Tufnell of the old training ship HMS Worcester at Greenhithe, a rare scene for Tufnell as he normally concentrated on modern warships.
Commander Eric Erskin Campbell Tufnell (1888-1979), born on the 9th September 1888 at Bangalore in India. Joined HMS Britannia as a cadet in 1903 and went to sea as a midshipman in 1904, serving in submarines from 1907-1917. Commanded several small ships in the Eastern Mediterraanean and served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1926-1930. He rejoined the navy in 1938 for met’ work in Ceylon and left in 1942 after the Japanese attack. He returned in 1946 after working for the Naval Information Service.
His watercolours have been shown at the Parker Gallery in London.
He lived in Farnham and died in his nineties.
