Specimen of printing in oil colours by George Baxter (1804-1867) after J Bartholomew, consisting of a floral still life with fruit and a bird’s nest in the foreground. In 1835 Baxter patented a colour printing process using oil colours. In spite of its high quality, this discovery, which was also licensed to other firms, made reproductions of paintings available on a mass scale for the first time. However Baxter did not profit greatly from the invention, and his lack of commercial success was also due to the competition he encountered from cheap coloured lithographs.
