Dianne Flynn was born in 1939 and brought up in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. She attended art schools in Huddersfield and Batley before going on to Manchester School of Art in 1970. She graduated three years later with a Diploma in Art and Design. In 1974 she obtained an Art Teachers Certificate from Leeds Polytechnic Institute. Following her studies she left for France, living and painting in the Languedoc with fellow artist and husband to be, Paul Hedley. Settling in London in 1975 she established a studio and divided her time between painting, exhibiting and teaching. Her skills brought her to the attention of George Rowney & Co. who employed her for several years as a demonstrator of oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastel techniques. Her work covers a broad range, but Flynn first achieved success as a portrait painter. She has written a number of articles on the subject, notably for the Artist magazine. Figures have always been a central interest, and the search for fresh ideas led the artist to dress her models in antiques costumes. The resulting paintings met with great success. Dianne Flynn delights to paint the happy, carefree life of children. Her flickering, bravura brushwork and bright palette conjure up children on holiday, at home or at the funfair.
