Henry Dawson was a marine and landscape painter who was born in Hull. He lived in Nottingham until 1844, when he moved to Liverpool to study at the Academy. He studied art with J. B. Pyne before moving, but was mainly self-taught in Liverpool, where after he soon acquired patrons. He moved to Croydon in 1850 and was encouraged by Ruskin to exhibit at the RA, where he exhibited 28 works. He also exhibited 33 paintings at the British Institute and 6 at the Suffolk Street Galleries. Prior to moving down south he exhibited at the Liverpool Academy and the Nottingham Gallery. He is represented at Ferens A. G., Hull and at the Castle Museum, Nottingham.
