This painting is signed Adolpho Schlatter, but further research into this painting leads us to believe that the original artist of this work was none other than Henry Schouten.
Schouten was highly talented and very often socialised and painted in partnership with many other artists of his era. This is possibly why he signed works under different names, he is known to have used in excess of 22 signatures, includING Jos Klaus, Joseph Klass, Meulat, V. Marinus and J. Remis. Educated at the Academy of Brussels, 1876 – 1881, and heavily influenced by Alfred Jaques Verwee (1838 – 1895), famous for his animal and chicken paintings. The intesity and detail of Verwee’s pictures was strongly adpoted and evidenced in Schoutens works.
