A watercolour by Eric Tufnell of HMS Vanguard as it was leaving Portsmouth harbour for the last time, 4th August 1960, on its way to be scrapped in Faslane. On its way out of the harbour they misjudged it and the ship went aground at Portsea Point opposite the Still & West pub, blocking the harbour entrance. It was refloated and then continued its way to the breakers yard.

Commander Eric Erskin Campbell Tufnell (1888-1979), born on the 9th September 1888 at Bangalore in India. Joined HMS Britannia as a cadet in 1903 and went to sea as a midshipman in 1904, serving in submarines from 1907-1917. Commanded several small ships in the Eastern Mediterraanean and served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1926-1930. He rejoined the navy in 1938 for met’ work in Ceylon and left in 1942 after the Japanese attack. He returned in 1946 after working for the Naval Information Service.

His watercolours have been shown at the Parker Gallery in London.

He lived in Farnham and died in his nineties.
