John Callow was a marine and landscape painter. He was a pupil of his elder brother William, who took him to Paris in 1835 where he studied for several years. In 1844 he returned to England and started up as a landscape painter in watercolours. In 1855 he was appointed Professor of Drawing in the Royal Military Academy at Addiscombe, and six years later he took the post of Sub-Professor of Drawing at Woolwich. Some years later he retired and painted for exhibitions as well as taking pupils. He excelled in marine painting more than landscapes. He exhibited yearly at the OWS and RA, BI, SS and NWS.
