Peter Iden was born in Bognor Regis on August 18 1945, he trained in graphics at West Sussex College of Art and Design, Worthing (wishing all the time that it was Fine Art), then worked as an architectural draughtsman, painting in his spare time. He first exhibited at the Royal Institution of Painters in Watercolour in London in 1968, when he was 23. The next year he put on the first of a series of annual one-man shows in Chichester, the proceeds of which would provide him with a living wage for the last two decades of his life. He continued to exhibit with the Royal Institution from 1977 to 1991.
