William Widgery born in Uppercot, North Molton, Devon. After moving to Exeter, he started painting in his spare time, starting by copying the engravings of Landseer, but it was not long before he was painting in his own style, whilst out in the local countryside. He trained as a stone mason and was self-taught as an artist. He painted the scenery of Devon and Cornwall, (especially Dartmoor), and was of ‘great local repute’, although he only exhibited once in London, at Suffolk Street, in 1866. He also visited Italy and Switzerland.
