The Battle of the Nile 1st August 1798—the French Flagship L’Orient explodes at the height of the battle. The L’Orient of 120 guns was at the heart of the line of 13 French ships which included three “Sail-of-the-Line” of 80 guns and from this stable position were able to deliver a substantial response to any assault. However, after a furious battle L’Orient was seen to be on fire at about 10 o’clock in the evening. She had only recently taken on tons of paint, tar and barrels of pitch which were left on the deck, this accelerated the demise of the 120 gun Flagship. After blazing for some time the L’Orient blew up with a detonation heard 13 miles away in Alexandria by French troops – most of her company were killed.
