On the reverse of this painting an original label from W.E.Atkins “ Portsmouth 59 years ago , The old Semaphore Tower (now removed), Saluting Battery, Grand Parade, HMS Marlborough “

This painting is after a similar scene depicted by Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich—titled “The Battery, Portsmouth Harbour. “ The painting shows the distinctive Semaphore Tower which used to stand on the Tudor powder magazine at the harbour entrance.
