This painting is after a similar scene depicted by Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) now in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich—titled “The Battery, Portsmouth Harbour. “ The painting shows the distinctive Semaphore Tower which used to stand on the Tudor powder magazine at the harbour entrance.
