” The Old Invincible ” the 7th ship to bear this name, she was a twin-screw 14 gun broadside Ironclad launched on 29th May 1869, she is painted here on 22nd August 1892 passing Queen Victoria`s Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, firing a salute, on her way to Cowes for summer manoeuvres in the Solent during 1892.
In 1904 the ships name was changed to “Erebus” and later to “Fisgard” when she became a training ship for boy artificers in Portsmouth. On 16th September 1914 she foundered, under tow in a gale, off Portland, 21 of the 64 men on board were drowned .
This is one of Atkins most evocative paintings and a fine example of his work.
