These beautiful Chinese standing figures with musical instruments, known as ‘Malabars’ decorated in delicate pastel shades, were originally modelled from engravings, between 1750 and 1755, at Meissen by Freidrich Elias Meyer. Born at Erfruit in Thuringia in 1724, Meyer came to Meissen in 1748 as an assistant to Kändler. He was an artist of the rococo and his charming allegories, shepherds and Chinese ladies have the authentic air of the period. Previously court sculptor at Weimar and a very gifted artist, it is said that Kändler was decidedly jealous of him. Meyers slender, graceful figures are quite distinct from other modellers. Meyer’s relations with Kändler had never been cordial and in 1761 he accepted an invitation to Berlin, where the financier Gotzkowsky had started a new factory.
