ANTIQUE GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER HASH SPOON
Length: 14 inches / 35.6 cm
Stock number: 856572/0121
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver hash spoon, the handle is embellished with the family crest and contemporary engraved initials ‘C’, of large size, being 14 inches long. The reverse has rubbed marks, but it is possible to see the date stamp for London 1763 and the makers mark W.W for William Withers.
Specialized spoons from the 18th and early 19th centuries, whose purpose it was to serve a mixture of meat and potatoes (hash).
These spoons are quite large, with proportionally larger bowls — sometimes quite massive in fact. They differ from 11-12 inch ‘basting spoons’ (which Americans fondly call ‘stuffing spoons’) not only in length (13″ to about 16″), but often in the sheer volume of the bowl itself.
