JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE BY KINKOZAN

A striking blue ground trumpet vase by Kinkozan, of typical form, solely decorated with sinuous dragons and tama in gilt with silver and red enamel highlights, all on a rich midnight blue ground, impressed Kinkozan mark.

The tama, eyes and claws of the dragons were painted in silver but, unlike gold, which keeps its colour, they have tarnished over the years.

‘?Kinkozan’? is probably the most familiar name amongst Satsuma collectors in the West. Although each piece bears the legend ‘?Kinkozan made it’? there were in fact over 1,000 potters and artists in the Kinkozan potteries and they accounted for an enormous output for the export market. This vase is a good example of the gilt on blue ground style for which Kinkozan became very famous. Audsley-Bowes illustrate one piece by Kinkozan on plate XXV.
