LARGE JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE
Date: Meiji Period
Stock Number: 960042/sat
Height: 21.5 ins / 54.61 cms
Price: SOLD
An unusual vase in the form of a large sack, with a rope round the neck, painted in sombre enamel colours and gilding with a frieze depicting warriors approaching the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove with a ho-ho hovering above them, all within broken brocade borders, two impressed seal marks.
Warriors and sages are often portrayed together on Satsuma pieces. As there were only seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, the other two venerable figures may well be Jurojin and Fukurokuju (see page 14). This is the only piece in the exhibition depicting a landscape, which may also explain the different mood of the colours. Browns, greens and greys predominate and even the textile borders lack the vibrancy and brightness so characteristic of the other pieces.
