ANTIQUE BURMESE RED & WHITE IVORY CHESS SET
Height of King: 4½ inches / 11.4 cm
Stock number: RW9479/0718
This is a high quality Canton chess set with fine carving, the set is often referred to as a “Burmese” set but these famous sets are most definitively Chinese and many were made of varying quality. The carving in this set is of a high quality and this is evidenced by the detailed pierced carving of the major pieces and the special attention to detail of all the carving on every piece, (notice the little faces on the kings and queens), it has its original flags. This is one of the better playing sets produced by the Chinese in the 19th century and they were either green and white (very rare) or red and white. This set does not appear to have any repairs , replacements or renewing and is in remarkable condition. It is also a very good size with kings at 4½ inches and the base of the kings at 1½ inches diameter.
All Chinese coloured ivory pieces from the 19th century have a tendency to fade and some collectors prefer to have them restrained. This is a matter of personal choice. We can arrange a quotation for restraining if that is what you prefer.
