ANTIQUE POLISHED BONE STAUNTON CHESS SET
19th century
King height: 8 cm
Stock number: RW3479/0119
Price: SOLD
A fine 19th century polished bone Staunton chess set, one side stained conchineal red and the other natural white. This is an example of a set carved by a very good turner and carver and the well chosen bone is highly polished. Contained in its original box with a sliding lid.
A viable alternative to the much more expensive ivory sets, most bone sets of the Victorian period were of lesser quality with particularly badly carved knights and often poorly chosen bone with many flaws. Not affected by the ivory ban at all these sets will have an active market well into the future
