A good Regency mahogany serpentine chest of small size and fine detail, the swept cornered top crossbanded in goncalo alves with a cable stringing, edged in satinwood the frieze and drawer divisions also in satinwood, the canted corners of purpleheart panelled with chevron inlay, all raised on a shaped bracket base. Original brassware.
This stylish chest exhibits typical features of Channel Isle manufacture, in the use of contrasting satinwood, intricate inlays and exotic tropical woods. It is often claimed that London bound merchantmen often called first at the islands where local cabinetmakers had their pick of the choicest timbers.
