Molenaer was a Haarlem genre painter who specialised in village scenes and drunken quarrels in taverns. He was influenced by Frans Hals. In 1647 he was living in Amsterdam. He died in Haarlem in 1668. An fine and interesting example of a Dutch old master genre painting depicting village life in the 17th Century.
19th century; re-lined canvas, stretcher and frame.
