A rank badge for a civil mandarin official of the 2nd Rank with a golden pheasant.
The bird is shown standing on a rock, above water and waves, surrounded by clouds and auspicious emblems including the attributes of the eight Taoist immortals.
The ranking system was designated by various colours and design symbols, and was publicly signified by an embroidered square that the Mandarin wore stitched upon his surcoat, worn over his court dragon robe. Worn by both military and civil officials, the Rank Badge motifs were executed in a variety of symbolic figures, bird designs for the civil system and animal motifs for the military, and often they are striking masterpieces of handsome colour, carefully organized design, and skilful needlework. These squares were either created at home by the wives and daughters of the officials or made to order from professional embroidery studios, many of which specialized in only one of the many designs. The wife of civil official was entitled to all the benefits of his rank, as well as the right to wear his official insignia. Women were also entitled to wear their fathers or sons.
