MacGregor was born in Fulham, London in 1925 and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a degree in architecture. He studied painting under George F Bradshaw and Julius Olsson (q.v.) As an undergraduate he had a one-man show at the Hilton Gallery, Cambridge, and in 1947 another one at the Woodstock Gallery in London. He has also exhibited at the Royal Institute of oil painters, New English Art Club, Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Society of British Artists and the Thames Valley Arts Club. He is best known as a leading expert on 19th Century deep water sailing ships and his publications included: The Tea Clippers (1952) The China Bird (1961) and Fast Sailing Ships 1775-1875 (1973), Daily Express best Book of the Sea Award in 1973.
