Historically, longest ever odds winner at 50-1.

Born at Market Rasen, son of a parson, educated at Kings College London. Ran away to Canada at the age of 17 to avoid career in law or diplomatic service. He was a self taught artist working on ranches for the Royal Canadian Police. While he was transporting horses to the United States his sketches came to the attention of an American general who sponsored the beginning of his career. Over the next few years he established himself in New York as an equestrian painter. In 1899 he returned to England and soon found patrons including the Duke of Portland, the Countess of Warwick, Edward VII and George V. He was considered by many contemporaries to the best horse painter of his time. He re-visited and lived in the United States during the early part of the 20th Century by invitation of many patrons for commission work. He is represented in the collection of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Palmer rarely exhibited his work, only 3 at the Liverpool Walker Art gallery and 2 at the ROI. In the UK he is represented at the Liverpool Waller Art Gallery, the Belfast Ulster Museum, the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, the Museum of London, the Mount Stewart House (Co. Down) National Trust and the Royal Collection.
