This hibatchi is the only piece which was actually in the possession of James Lord Bowes. Unfortunately, over the years, it has lost its top section and been extensively damaged. Nevertheless it gives us tangible evidence of the body, glaze, potting and decoration of this type of earthenware against which all the other pieces in this collection can be compared.

Audsley-Bowes catalogue this piece under the heading ‘Kioto’ and say it was manufactured and painted in Awata. Wares from Kyoto, Awata and Satsuma province were evidently frequently produced in tandem. It is certainly well documented that vessels were often made in one area and shipped to another for decorating. Items bearing the Taizan name are often attributed to the 20th century so it is worth noting that there are three variations of the Taizan signature in the index of Keramic Art of Japan, one of which was taken from this hibatchi.
